In 2008 the Living Yangtze Project of the Swarovski Water School commenced with its agenda to fund ecological water management programs aimed at educating young students along the Yangtze River in China. After the powerful earthquake that devastated the Sichuan Province in May of 2008, a partial redirection of the Living Yangtze Project funds was affirmed for aiding the distressed community of Sichuan.
In addition to supportive measures directed at alleviating the resulting environmental strain, teachers are given access to psychological counseling to positively affect themselves, their students and their communities. Assistance in the reconstruction of regional schools, incorporating advanced earthquake-resistant architectural structures, is underway and in some instances, completed.
Further improvements being carried out within these reconstruction processes to schools and premises include new building facilities. For example, the Mianyang Beichuan Piankou elementary school will receive a new laboratory while a water school complex will be added to the Xianhai elementary school. The Duiangyan Beijie elementary school, aside from the necessary reconstruction, will receive a new school cafeteria.
All pilot locations of the Swarovski Water School in the earthquake-torn regions of Sichuan will be integrated with new laboratories specifically designed for conducting water quality tests. The laboratories offer both teachers and students the premises and tools to experiment, analyse and assess the condition of local water and the affected environment.
